Ottoman Sultans' concubines : ウィキペディア英語版 | List of consorts of the Ottoman sultans This is a list of Consorts of the Ottoman sultans, the wives and concubines of the monarchs of the Ottoman Empire who ruled over the transcontinental empire from its inception in 1299 to its dissolution in 1922. This list does not include empress consorts because the Ottoman sultans practiced polygamy. The imperial ladies held the titles of Hatun, Haseki Sultan, Kadınefendi and Hanımefendi. In the Ottoman period, the term ''Hatun'' was used as an honorific for women, roughly equivalent to the English term ''Lady''. The term was being used for the royal consorts. When the son of one of the royal consort ascended the throne she became ''Valide Hatun''. In 1520 when Suleiman the Magnificent ascended the throne, he attributed the title ''Valide Sultan'' to his mother, and thus making Ayşe Hafsa the first Valide Sultan. He also gave preference to a single concubine Hürrem and attributed her the title ''Haseki Sultan''. The Haseki Sultan being the only concubine of the sultan bore him sons and could wield her power when her son ascended the throne and thus becoming the Sultan and she herself becoming the Valide Sultan. Towards the end of the seventeenth century the title Hatun along with Haseki Sultan was replaced by two relevant titles i.e. Kadınefendi and Hanımefendi. ''Kadınefendi'' was the title given to the official wives of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The title first came in use during the reign of Sultan Suleiman II. The Sultan could have up to four and some times five women i.e. wives with the royal rank of Kadınefendi and unlimited number of wives with the rank of Hanımefendi. ''Hanımefendi'' was the title given to the official, next favorite wives of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who came below the rank of Kadınefendi. The title was given to the Ikbals of the Sultan, which appeared for the first time in the reign of Sultan Mustafa II, the end of the seventeenth century, the start of the Ottoman Decline. ==Consorts of Ottoman Sultans==
